Flag of NH History
The New Hampshire flag contains the state seal. The state seal was created not long after the Revolutionary War and adopted in 1784. The flag was designed not long after that, as legislature was made stating that the seal should be used by the state’s militia in 1792. While the flag showcasing the seal was used for regimental purposes, it wasn’t officially made the New Hampshire state flag until 1909. The seal and flag were updated in 1931 so the law about the seal’s design could be more specific. The law gave a more detailed description about the seal’s design. It made the ship image the main focus and replaced the Latin phrase “Sigillum Reipublicae Neo Hantoniensis with “Seal of the State of New Hampshire”. The current NH state flag under the new guidelines was adopted in 1932.
New Hampshire Flag Meaning
State Seal: The boat on the seal is the USS Raleigh, one of the first warships built for the US Navy in Portsmouth. The water the Raleigh is on is supposed to refer to Portsmouth. The land shown on the seal showcases the state’s rugged landscape: granite and rock. The use of strong granite and rock stands for the strength of the people. The rising sun behind the ship was added in 1784 when Portsmouth was a major shipbuilding location.
Nine Stars and Wreath: The seal of the New Hampshire state flag is surrounded by nine golden stars in a laurel wreath. The wreath is a symbol of victory and honor. There are nine stars because New Hampshire was the ninth state to enter the Union.
