Australia Flags Details

Display the Australian flag for all to see in front of your home or business. These flags were made for both indoor and outdoor locations due to their durable material and print. The fabric is an outdoor-tested polyester that will not tear when exposed to different weather conditions for a longer flag life. The print is recreated using a dye sublimation technique, which ingrains the ink into the material so that it will not scratch or peel off. We print the design on one side of the material and the reverse image bleeds through to the other side. This is standard procedure for state and country flags. If you need hardware for setting up your flag, add on either a handheld or mounted pole set to your order for simple installation. Grommets are finished on the side of the flag for securing the Aussie flag to a flagpole. Let all your friends and neighbors see that you’re proud of your home country with these Australia flags for sale.

Australian Flag History

The flag of the British Empire, or the Union Flag, was used in Australia in 1770. During the 1800s, when Australia began trying to break away from British rule, two unofficial flags were developed. The National Colonial Flag was designed in the 1820s, which had a red cross on a white background with eight-point stars in the cross and the Union Flag in the top left corner. The more popular of the two was the Federation Flag from the 1830s. The design was the same as the Colonial Flag, except the cross was blue rather than the red St. George’s cross. The flag became increasing common as the century went on. Similar designs were used for other flags around the period, such as the Eureka Flag, which has a white cross on a blue background and the Anti-Transportation League Flag, which looked like the modern national flag. When Federation happened in 1901, a competition was held for designing a new federal flag. Five winners with similar designs were chosen. The flag was first flown on September 3, 1901, and it was slightly modified and adopted in 1903 (four seven-pointed stars and one five-pointed star). The Australia flag was also changed to have seven-pointed Commonwealth Star in 1908.

Meaning of Australia’s Flag

Southern Cross: The Southern Cross is a constellation seen in the southern hemisphere of the world. It has been a symbol of Australia since its early days when it was part of the British Empire. One of the designers of the flag also saw the Southern Cross as a symbol of Dante’s four main stars: justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude. The competition winners for the national flag had the Southern Cross have between five and nine points. The more central star was eventually given 5 points while the outer stars were given seven points to make manufacturing the Australian flag easier.

Union Jack: Refers to the time Australia was a British colony before it gained its federation. Some, however, see including the Union Jack as showing loyalty to the British Empire. The Australia flag was believed to be “too Victoria” by some when it was first created.

Commonwealth Star: The star is also known as the Federation Star. Originally having six points to represent all the colonies, a seventh point was added to represent a new territory and any other ones that might come. A seventh point was also added to look like the star on the country’s recent created coat of arms.
