Irish Flag History
Prior to the current design of the Ireland flag, a green flag with a harp was used since 1642. Around this time, green became associated with Ireland because green ribbons were worn for St. Patrick’s Day, and it was adopted by The Friendly Brothers of St. Patrick. The green, orange, and white tricolor first appeared on cockades in the 1830 to celebrate the anniversary of the French Revolution. The tricolor was inspired by France’s flag. In 1848, the tricolor design was used for a flag by Thomas Francis Meagher, a leader of Young Ireland. The flag related to Young Irelanders and the revolution but was not nationally recognized. Throughout the years, the flag sometimes had a different order of the colors or orange was replaced with yellow. When the Free Irish State was established in 1922, the tricolor flag or the “Sinn Féin flag” was adopted by the Executive Council. It officially became the national flag in 1937 when it was confirmed by the new Constitution of Ireland.
