Portugal Flags Details

Let all passersby who walk or drive past your home or business know that you love your country with a 3x5 Portuguese flag for sale. These flags hold up in both indoor and outdoor settings due to the quality material and print. This is because our flags are made from knitted polyester, which is outdoor-tested, and tear-resistant so different types of weather won’t ruin it. Our print is also designed for durability because we use a modern dye sublimation technique, which ingrains the ink into the fabric to prevent it from scratching or peeling off the fabric. We print the Portugal flag design on one side of the material, and it bleeds through to the other side so it’s visible from all directions. Add on hardware for assembling your flag to your order by choosing between a handheld or mounted pole set. The grommets on the side are for simple installation. Our flags are great for displaying in front of your building, on your front porch, at the entrance of your business, or anywhere else you wish to share your country pride.

Portuguese Flag History

Before the current design of Portugal flags, there were several flags used by the country. The coat of arms has involved over the years to become the current design seen on the flag. The first shield identified with the country was used by Henry of Burgundy, who was the Count of Portugal in 1095. His design is where the blue came from, but it eventually evolved to include red in the 1200s and the more shield-like shape in the 1400s. Prior to the current design, the Portuguese flag often included blue and white colors behind the coat of arms. The traditional blue and white colors began being replaced with red and green during the Republican revolution in 1910, because they didn’t like the prior colors being associated with religion and the monarchy. The red and green colors were favored by the Portuguese Republican Party because they were the colors used during the republican insurrection in 1891. The new national flag was presented in 1910 to commemorate the anniversary of the Restoration of Independence during the Portuguese Restoration War of the 1600s.

Portugal Flag Meaning and Colors

Green: The addition of green to the flag was to represent hope and that it “sparked the redeeming lightning” during the 1891 insurrection.

Red: This Portugal flag color was added to symbolize the blood shed of those defending the country. It was also said to be a “battling, warm, virile” color and one of “conquest and laughter”.

Coat of Arms: The white on the shield symbolized harmony because it is the color which other colors merge. The armillary sphere surrounding the coat of arms refers to a device that was used for navigation during the Age of Exploration, a golden era for Portugal. The shield includes seven castles on top and five blue shields. Each blue shield includes five white dots. It is an emblem for Portuguese victories by referring to the seven castles Portugal took back from the Moors, the five Moorish kings killed by Alfonso I, and the five wounds of Christ.
