History of the Flag of Qatar
This flag has been identified with Qatar after the country declared independence from Britain. In the country’s beginning, however, the Qatari flag was all red to represent a red banner used by Kharjite leader and poet, Qatari ibn al-Fuja’a. The white stripe was added during the country’s British rule. After the addition of the white stripe, Mohammad bin Thani adopted a maroon and white design like the current flag of Qatar. The flag saw several other additions to the design in the ‘30s, such as the jagged edge of the colors, the words “Qatar”, and diamonds. The “Qatar” wording and the diamonds were removed in the ‘60s, but the triangle edge was kept. The flag was officially adopted by the country in 1971, after their independence.
Qatar Flag Meaning
White: This color is on the hoist side and is meant to represent peace.
Maroon: This dark red color represents the blood of the Kharijite Muslims from war.
Nine White Triangles: There are nine triangles in the serrated section because it was the ninth of the emirates that gained independence in 1916 in the Arab Gulf from an agreement with the British.
