Our Hawaii state flags are made from Outdoor Flag Polyester. This material is heavier duty compared to cheap flags made from nylon that rip and tear easily. Our flag material has been tested for outdoor use in different weather conditions over extended periods. The polyester is tear-resistant, but lightweight due to its knitted fabric. This prevents the flag from ripping when exposed to wind, rain, and snow. The printing is a modern dye sublimation technique, which guarantees bright, lasting colors that will not scratch or peel. We print the state flag design on one side of the material and the design bleeds through to the other side, allowing the Hawaii flag to be visible from both sides. This is the common practice for state flags and saves you printing fees.
Hardware Options

Hawaiian State Flag History
The Hawaii state flag is seen as a sign of sovereignty of the Hawaiian Islands. Before 1810, the Hawaiian Islands were individually ruled by their own King with their own politics and religion. This changed when one of the rulers, Kamehameha, also known as Kamehameha the Great, took over the Islands and formed a sovereign nation. When all the Islands came together as one, in 1810, a flag was created in 1816 to represent the entire nation. The original Hawaiian flag is also known as the Kingdom of Hawaii flag.
The Original Kanaka Maoli Flag
What is the state flag of Hawaii? While the 1816 design of the Hawaii flag is the universally recognized symbol of the state, some argue that the Kanaka Maoli flag is the official flag of the Islands. The Kanaka Maoli flag is also known as the Native Hawaiian Flag. The flag was introduced to the public in 2001 by Gene Simeona as Kamehameha’s original Hawaiian flag design and personal flag for the Islands before it was destroyed in 1843 and the 1816 design was adapted. This old Hawaiian flag included the green, red, and yellow stripes and a coat of arms at the center that stood for the tradition of traveling by paddle. The different colors stood for the different people of the Islands with yellow being royal, red being people of the land, and green being “commoners”. Many natives see the Hawaiian original flag as a better representation of their state, and it has become a popular symbol.
Hawaii State Flag Officially Adopted in 1845
Even though the Hawaii flag was created in 1816, it was not officially adopted by the state until 1845. This was because the sovereignty and the Hawaiian national flag were not officially recognized by the Admiral of the Royal Navy until 1843. The Admiral recognized Hawaii because its independence was threatened by British Lord Paulette, who claimed the Islands for a few months. This is when it is believed that the Kanaka Maoli flag was destroyed. When the Admiral recognized the sovereignty of Hawaii, this stopped Lord Paulette from taking over the Islands. The state motto of Hawaii was born after this event when Kamehameha said, “Ua ma ke ea o ka ‘aina i ka pono”, which means “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” The Legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom occurred in 1845 where the flag was recommissioned and officially adopted by the state.
Hawaii Flag Meaning
When looking at the Hawaii state flag, it is immediately noticeable that there is the British flag, also known as the Union Jack, located on the top left. Kamehameha established a relationship with Britain during his reign. An officer in the Royal Navy came up with the design of the Hawaiian flag when was he was commissioned by Kamehameha. Therefore, the British flag is included in the design. It was meant to represent the relationship the Islands of Hawaii had with Britain. Some also believe that the Hawaiian flag was a combination of the Union Flag of the US and the Union Jack of the UK as a compromise between the two nations when it came to their connections to Hawaii.
